What's New in My Bag?
Have a couple of new items in my bag, a Callaway FT-3 Fusion Driver and a new set of Ping G10 Irons. I also shelved the Odyssey 2-Ball putter in favor of my old Bronze Ping Anser.

Meet my new caddie
Now that the USGA has made GPS and Laser range finders legal for play, I decided that there was no reason to ever be without a good yardage again. Meet my new caddie, the SkyCaddie SG3. It uses GPS to get nearly exact yardages, so no more pacing off from a marker and guesswork. In theory a device like this should make you play faster, but I'm already a fast player so I'd be surprised if it picked up my pace. What I hope to get out of it is better info for club selection which should lead to less yardage judging errors.

Golf in Hawaii
I had a chance to play golf at the Kauai Lagoons Golf Club (Kiele Course) when we visited Hawaii for Christmas. I didn't feel like lugging around the Rebel at the course, and DRE* had the Optio, so I was sans camera. Fortunately one of my playing partners was kind enough to take pics and put them up on Yahoo! Photos.

The course was beautiful and had some challenging holes. We had little wind, but I could see the course playing very tough when it blows hard.

Golf in Las Vegas
Had a chance to play some golf while in Las Vegas last week at Aliante Golf Club. It was my first desert course and quite beautiful in a stark way. Reminded me of Saudi Arabia a bit. We rented clubs rather than schlepping our own, so I had a chance to try out a set of Nike sticks. Have to say that I hated them mightily in comparison to my good old Ping G2's. Suprisingly enough, I shot right at my handicap, which usually doesn't happen on a strange course with strange equipment.

2006 Club Champion!
After a long hot summer of golf we finally made it to the homestretch of the season, the club championship.

I'd been playing poorly all summer, with my handicap reaching the highest point ever. I knew that the championship was coming up so I started spending more time on the driving range and getting in more rounds on the course. Over the last couple of weeks it had started to bear fruit and my scores and consistency were improving. Turned out to be quite a timely turnaround as I ended up winning the Club Championship for Mens "B" Flight, posting a net score of 143 (71-72) over two days.

Now to carry that momentum into next season...

Updated: What's in my bag? A new driver!
It's that time of the year again, that's right, golf season. And like the swallows return to Capistrano, so often do new clubs arrive in my bag.

I'd been wanting to hit the new Taylor Made r7 425 TP since it came out, as I've been hearing great things about it. Since I was off work today and had no other commitments, it was off to the PGA Superstore for a demo in the simulator. I also brought along my old r7 for a side-by-side comparison. The difference was pretty amazing. I'd always felt like I didn't get the distance out of the r7 like I used to get with my old Ping TiSi (290+) and was able to confirm it on the simulator. Over 10 drives with the old r7 I averaged just over 275 yards with a very wide dispersion in both directions. Over 13 drives with the r7 425 TP I averaged 301 yards with a very narrow dispersion and my ball flight was straight to a slight draw, zero fades or pushes (kind of funny since it has a slightly open face). There was a consistent feel with the REAX 75 shaft that the old r7 just didn't have. The old r7 has only 4 moveable weights, while the TP has 12. This allows you to tinker with draw or fade bias, ball height and swingweight so that you can set it up exactly how you like it. I'm starting out with the standard weight configuration for tomorrow but will spend some range time down the road to figure out what is exactly right for me.

A wholly different kind of bag is bean bag chairs, those big, lumpy seats that make an interesting piece of furniture when you put bean bags in your living room or other meeting location, letting people sprawl in a bean bag chair anywhere in the room.

What's in my bag...
I'm playing golf again after a several year hiatus. Since moving into town 3 years ago I've played about as many rounds total as I used to play in a month. I joined Bradshaw Farms Golf Club in May and am getting in 1+ rounds per week. Not quite the glory days of 5+ rounds a week, but I'm not complaining (too much).

I've signficantly restructured my bag since the comeback, replacing the forged Mizuno MP-33 irons and Ping Driver & Woods. The only hold-overs from my old stuff are the Cleveland wedges and Ping putter. Now I'm playing more "game improvement" technology, which is necessary when you start getting older and don't play enough to stay sharp.

When I stopped playing my handicap index was 9.3. Currently I'm trending towards 15+, so there obviously is much work to do. With some lessons and dedication to practice next year will bring good things to my game (fingers & toes crossed).
