March 2003

Amsterdam, with the river Amstel helping to give a lively current to its canals, with its patchwork of water streets, its long double rows of trees which seem endless, its palaces, its magnificent houses with machicolated roofs, and, above all, the quaint craft, the old Dutch galleons, with their shadowy sails, their fine brown color, their queer round outlines, their unending picturesqueness, is a paradise for the painter.... Even the family washing, which the boatman’s wife hangs out, with an occasional red shirt, helps the picture. It is a dream of color and tender tones.

Dre can't go anywhere without licking something
We took a cruise on Sunday morning down a portion of the Amstel and through some of Amsterdam's more beautiful canals. Many were lined with gabled houses and stately buildings. Shawn took a lot of pictures while Dre enjoyed her beer and the unseasonably warm and sunny weather.

These are from a cool Pancake House that we hit after our river cruise. Climb the steepest set of stairs you've ever seen to eat amazing pancakes in a restaraunt the size of a living room. The cook was very pleasant and took our picture. Claimed that he wasn't proficient with electronic devices, but his husband was.
